Matthew Perry

It is difficult for children in Kershaw County today to even imagine the Jim Crow era, when African-Americans had to use separate bathrooms, couldn't eat in most restaurants, endured poor facilities and often had a difficult time even voting. That was just a bit more than a generation ago, and one of the towering figures who fought such injustices was Matthew Perry, who died earlier this week at age 89.

YMCA not county's concern

I have taken no position regarding the YMCA controversy because I don't live in the city limits. I do pay taxes to the city by virtue of shopping and frequenting restaurants in the city, and while I believe purchasing property and constructing a YMCA facility is a far cry from the highest and best use of the citizens' dollars and is as unwise as the Town Green, still I felt objection should come from residents of the city.

Sweet ride

Randy McCoy, with Randy's Tire and Lube in Lugoff, is the new owner of a 1972 Chevelle SS 454. Famed NASCAR driver Mark Martin surprised McCoy with the car during a July 20 celebration at CarQuest Auto Parts in Lugoff. McCoy said he entered CarQuest's "Restore Your Ride Sweepstakes" national competition several months ago, but was shocked to find out during the celebration that he was actually the winner. "I'm going to keep it put up, that's for sure. The value on it is worth more than anything I've got in my garage," he said ...

Breivik's real enemy: himself

Anders Breivik, the far-far-right-wing monster charged in Norway with the biggest mass murder by a single gunman in modern memory, reminds me of how often delusional minds hate others for what they really see in themselves.

Noted and passed - Aug. 18, 2014

• Here in Kershaw County, we don't think about bridges much, unless it's the spans crossing the Lynches and Wateree rivers on U.S. 1, I-20 and other roads.
