I was in my hometown -- the fair city of Camden -- June 30-July 12. It is always nice to be home, where I spent the first 18 years of my life. I attended and graduated from Jackson Elementary, Jackson Junior High and Jackson High schools.

Most of the people who lived there and felt an allegiance to the crown left the area around 230 years ago. Many of the loyalists or Tories voluntarily left before the American Revolution, but those who sided and fought with the British eventually lost their homes and fled.
Cheer up. Not everything went down over the last two weeks.
Texas Gov. Rick Perry quickly discovered that national politics is a whole different game than statewide politics -- even in as huge a place as the Lone Star State -- shortly after he formally announced his presidential candidacy in South Carolina. Perry said Ben Bernanke, chairman of the Federal Reserve, was acting in a "treasonous" way with national monetary policy. He also said that were Bernanke down in Texas, he'd be treated "pretty ugly" because of his job performance.
For a week, in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees, a team from the Salkehatchie Summer Service worked to physically improve the homes of needy families in Clarendon County. With hammers and saws a group of 75 high school and college youth volunteers worked to improve the living conditions of 10 homes. Leading a team was Mayor Jeffrey Graham of Camden. Salkehatchie Summer Service is a program of the South Carolina Conference Board of Global Ministries and consists of a number of work camps for United Methodist Youth in South Carolina. Over 50 camps were established this year from May to August ...
Not so fast, Mayor Graham and city council. Let's talk tourism. The National Steeplechase Museum is sponsoring a new antiques fair at Rhame Arena in October. The arena is downtown with lots of parking and extremely convenient to the interstate. Think about it -- if council had its way, the arena would have been torn down by now and taxpayers would be spending $6 to $8 million on a new YMCA on the Mather Academy property. Can we house an antiques fair at the YMCA? Can we hold the annual Firefest event at the YMCA?
If you've recently traveled to a vacation area that's popular with motorcyclists -- Myrtle Beach or the Blue Ridge Parkway come to mind -- you might have noticed the latest trend in the biker world, a development that only a decade ago would have been considered unfathomable:

What should have been a celebration of a sturdy football win by Camden High School (CHS) turned into an ugly incident Friday night at Zemp Stadium when a brawl occurred as players went through the handshake line following the game. The incident led to a significant amount of publicity across the state, causing a black eye to CHS and the city itself. While various investigations of the fight continue, including scrutiny by the Camden Police Department for possible criminal conduct, it appears the brawl was triggered by Dreher players.
