• We note the passing of Debi Davis, former director of special needs for the Kershaw County School District. According to her obituary, Davis died after a year and a half-long battle with pancreatic cancer. In Friday's edition, co-workers, administrators and a parent of a special needs child all lauded Davis' work with the district. The district pointed out she was one of Doby's Mill Elementary School's first teachers when it opened. In 1858, James Chesnut Jr. was elected U.S. Senator from South Carolina. On Feb 15, 1859, this entry was recorded in portrait painter William H. Scarborough's account book, "of James Chesnut Sr., $113.35." The senior Chesnut was paying for the portrait painted by Scarborough of his son James, the newly elected U.S. Senator.

Elgin resident wins first at Pokèmon City Championships

After a full day of head-to-head Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) battles, Allen Marchman took first place in the junior division at the 2014/2015 Pokémon City Championships in Columbia. Along with the coveted title and city championship trophy, Marchman earned valuable championship points that count towards a potential invitation to compete at the 2015 Pokémon World Championships.

Colleen Pate Horton

Colleen Pate Horton, 80, of Kershaw, South Carolina, passed away on December 18, 2014. Born in Black Mountain, North Carolina, on June 17, 1934, she was the daughter of Rev. W.C. Pate, Sr. and Bernice Ledbetter Pate. Colleen was a graduate of Chesnee High School, Mars Hill College and Winthrop University. She married Jerry Horton on December 21, 1956, they enjoyed a wonderful fifty-eight year union, where their devotion to each other served as a wonderful example to their family.
