Among the animals available for adoption at the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter are Rambler, an adorable 2-year-old Beagle male and a Calico cat. The adoption donation includes spaying or neutering. The shelter, located at the south end of Fair Street and managed by the Kershaw County Humane Society, is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. New state vaccine requirement for students

South Carolina state law mandates that all 7th graders show proof of having had a Tdap booster after their 7th birthday at the start of this school year. Kershaw County School District (KCSD) officials have given students who have not provided new certifications of immunization showing they have met this requirement until September 30 to comply.

Justice Roberts

One of the offshoots of our politically divided nation is a similarly divided Supreme Court. We would all like to think that justices ponder every case on its own merits without letting political philosophy jaundice their thinking, but that is not the case. And most justices appointed in recent years can be reliably predicted to come down on a particular side of an issue; that often revolves around so-called liberal or conservative doctrine. Civil War-time fare

If you were a Carolina lady in the 1850s, you would likely have a copy of the latest and most fashionable cookbook of the times -- The Carolina Housewife. The little book was written by "A Lady of Charleston" and published in 1847. The "Lady" was Sarah Rutledge, daughter of Edward Rutledge, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The Camden Archives and Museum has an 1851 edition of the book in our collection.
