Helen Jean Lanin, of Elgin, has passed on. Helen was born on November 29, 1938 in Houston Texas. She is a graduate of LaPorte High School and Stephen F. Austin College. She was a teacher and real estate agent who loved reading and crafts.

Child abuse case lands Lugoff couple in jail

A woman and her live in boyfriend are in jail after Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) investigators determined that the woman's 4 year old daughter had been physically abused so severely that both of her arms and one of her legs were broken.

• Political spin is a given these days, and President Obama is as good -- or bad, given your point of view -- at it as anyone. We were amused at his response to one reporter after Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen stuck her foot in her mouth with her comment about Ann Romney's never having "worked a day in her life." Obama referred to Rosen as "some woman on television," conveniently forgetting that she's a Democratic operative. We'll have to admit that goes beyond spin.
