Saddened by all of us

I never failed to get excited after coming home from my travels and seeing the Kershaw County line sign as I'm heading towards home. I have such fond memories of growing up here, being in elementary school in Pine Tree Hill and waiting for the Christmas parade on Broad Street, visiting the Kershaw County Library and being read to by the librarians there, playing tennis at Rectory Square and Hampton Park, swimming, boating and skiing at Lake Wateree, running at Scott Park, eating a burger at BSL or Little Midget or, if you're old enough to remember, even ...

Their fair share

We commented Wednesday on the majesty of presidential inaugurations -- President Obama's, to be specific -- but noted that oath-taking day is one in which all Americans can take pride in the way our government operates. With the exception of Beyonce's rendition of the Star Spangled Banner -- was she lip-synching or not? -- there was little controversy to be observed.

Sheheen Named Rodel Fellow by Aspen Institute

Kershaw County State Sen. Vincent Sheheen has been nominated to be part of the Rodel Fellowship in Public Leadership Program at the Aspen Institute. Sheheen senator will join 24 other elected officials from around the country who have been recognized as "America's emerging political leaders with reputations for intellect, thoughtfulness, and a commitment to civil dialogue." Fellows include mayors, state representatives and senators and state-wide elected officials.

Sixteen Kershaw County educators -- one first time applicant and 15 renewals -- have earned the highest credential available in the teaching profession, bringing the total number of KCSD teachers who are National Board certified to 125.
