U.S. Navy Seaman Apprentice Mykal D. Ruvalcaba, daughter of Ericka M. and Robert G. Ruvalcaba of Elgin, was recently promoted to her current rank upon graduation from recruit training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

The Black History Month celebration at Wateree Elementary School included an assembly where students performed skits about Ruby Bridges (the first African American to start attending an all-white school) and Larry Doby (Kershaw County's own hometown hero and Baseball Hall of Fame standout. Jak Smyrl collection purchased by USC library
The University of South Carolina (USC) Libraries is now home to a collection of more than 5,000 images, plus correspondence, sketchbooks, and even early elementary-school artwork Camden's Oscar Jackson "Jak" Smyrl, The State newspaper's first staff artist, who passed away in 2007.
CHS to honor student-athletes at banquet
