Letter: Lions thank residents for support of charities

The Camden Lions Club was chartered on Sept. 4, 1945. We have been fulfilling our motto of "We Serve" in Kershaw County for 70 years. To give you an idea of what we do, I am submitting the following information about our charitable services to the citizens of Kershaw County.

Letter: Problem with Arrants’ ‘cat problem’ column

In response to Josh Arrants' column, "The Impact of Cats," I was disappointed to read he calls cats "one of the worst ecological disasters I've ever seen." The study he referenced in his article by the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has been questioned for its accuracy and reliability since it was first released.

A Quilt of Valor

William Ogburn of Lugoff, recently received a special gift, a Quilt of Valor. The Quilts of Valor foundation is a non-profit organization providing beautiful, lap-sized quilts for military service men and women returning from deployments or who has served in war. Ogburn, 95, is a World War II veteran who served with the 10th Armored Division, known as the "Tiger Division." Ogburn served in the battles of Trier, Bastogne and the Battle of the Bulge. Letter: Reader doesn’t like Mulvaney’s Planned Parenthood stance

One of our South Carolina "leaders" in the United States House of Representatives (Mick Mulvaney) is committed to shutting down the government in order to defund Planned Parenthood in spite of the fact that the organization does more than any other to prevent unwanted pregnancies (through education and counseling) and to help women and men and children who cannot afford health care otherwise. Mr. Mulvaney and 32 other Republicans are willing to shut down our government at huge expense to the tax payer -- while he and his colleagues in the House enjoy incredible health care at taxpayers' expense.

Camden Business Alliance says ‘thanks’

Peter and Fran Rowland, owners of Mulberry Bake Shop in downtown Camden, were surprised recently by the presentation of a miniature Mulberry Bake Shop in appreciation of three years of providing fresh pastries for the Camden Business Alliance's "Breakfast Before Hours" quarterly meetings free of charge.

Ashwood reunion

The Ashwood Central High Class of 1978, which included members now living in Kershaw County, recently held its 37th reunion with a weekend of festivities at the Lee County Opera House and Ashwood gym in Bishopville. Patricia Simon organized the event which opened with Ronnie Wilson welcoming everyone to the drop-in. The speaker for the occasion was Debra A. Joe. Minister Linda C.M. Davis read the scripture and Bernice Joe Boykin sang a song. They ended the weekend festivities with church services at Mt. Olive in Woodrow.
