Reader: ‘Thank a bus driver’

School is out for the summer and students and teachers are enjoying a well-deserved vacation. The students have enjoyed another safe and successful year of school. There are many people responsible for this who deserve our thanks. These include parents, grandparents, teachers, administrators, school crossing guards and bus drivers among others. The one group which probably deserves the most credit for our students' safety, but seldom receive it, is our bus drivers.

AKA Sorority Inc. presents scholarship awards to L-E grads

Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority Inc. presented scholarships to several students as the 2014-15 school year wound down. LaKayla Renae Dixon and Aayahna Monae Herbert, both Lugoff-Elgin High School seniors, each received the 2015 scholarship awards from AKA's Iota Omega Omega Chapter.

Boys & Girls Club of the Midlands President Carter Clark accepts a check for $5,000 from Claire Shell of Second Look Charities on Monday afternoon outside the Jackson Teen Center (JTC). The donation -- complimenting a recent $8,000 grant to The ALPHA Center -- will help purchase recording equipment so students will have a state-of-the-art modern facility to record, produce, develop and market a music CD featuring local talent. Pets of the Week - July 10, 2015

Among the animals available for adoption at the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter are Fiona, a 2-year-old female Maltese mix dog, and Kiki, a 5-year-old female domestic short-haired cat. The adoption donation includes spaying or neutering. The shelter, located at the south end of Fair Street and managed by the Kershaw County Humane Society, is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. A grand opening

Adams Hay & Feed, 40 East DeKalb St., recently held a ribbon cutting and grand opening. Owners Regina and Ronald Adams, and Manager Timo Koenig said the business offers a variety of hay, straw, shavings, animal feeds and supplies, tack, barn supplies, lawn and garden needs, fencing products and "gifts for the whole family" as well.
