Last week's forecasts of an "epic winter storm" in the South had everyone in Kershaw County scurrying around trying to get prepared. Of course, it's an old joke that if a few flakes of snow are forecast, Southerners flood grocery stores to stock up with milk and bread -- we've never quite understood why milk and bread -- and supermarkets in this area were indeed beehives of activity early last week as people prepared for possible power outages and periods of being homebound.
The other day, a long time South Carolina businessman remarked that in the past, the top 10 leaders in our state were the 10 white males that had the 10 biggest corner offices on the top floor of the 10 tallest buildings in the state.

They're having a luncheon in Heaven and Lula Mae Jowers is the guest of honor! Lula Mae Sutton Jowers, 92, died Friday, February 14, 2014. Daughter of the late John D. and Norma Lee Sutton, Lula Mae was born in Columbia and attended Columbia High School and The University of South Carolina, where she was treasurer of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. She married Lawrence Victor Jowers on December 18, 1942 and went with him to Atlanta while he attended medical school and then back to Columbia to live and raise her family.
Graveside service for Theresa Charlene Small, 63, will be held Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in Sandy Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday 6-8 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home.
A funeral service to celebrate the life of Candice Digman, 60, of Lugoff, SC, will be held at Noon on Thursday, February 20, 2014 at Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel. Thoyd Warren will be the speaker. Memorials may be made in Candice's memory to Kershaw Center Foundation, P.O. Box 310, Camden, SC 29021.
A celebration of life for Deborah "Debbie" Saunders Garris, 62, of Camden, SC, will be held at 3:00 PM, Monday, February 17, 2014 at the Steeplechase Museum in Camden. Rev. William R. Bouknight will officiate. Inurnment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park at a later date. Memorials may be made in Debbie's memory to the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter, 460 S. Fair Street, Camden, SC 29020 or a charity of one's choice.
A celebration of life for Stan Williams, 49, of Lugoff, SC, will be held at the home of Bobby and Paula Joseph on Saturday, February 22, at 5:00 PM. Stan passed away on Friday, February 14, 2014. He was born in Camden, SC, the son of the late Doris Emerson Williams and Charles Lindburgh Williams.
