Real Christmas spirit

On Christmas Eve my daughter and I set out to do our "last minute" errands which entailed going to at least six different stores. When we returned home, I realized that I had lost a very sentimental piece of jewelry that was handed down to me through my family. These animals would love to go home with you

Among the animals available for adoption at the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter are Jake, a 6-month-old male Pit Bull mix, and Winston, a male ferret whose age is unknown. Winston has been descented and Jake is leash trained and gets along well with other animals. The adoption donation includes spaying or neutering. The people of Kershaw County and South Carolina will be the big winners as a result of an agreement that will leave a huge piece of land near Lake Wateree protected from development forever. Sen. Vincent Sheheen deserves a great deal of credit for making the deal happen, as he was the point man, and he says it was the culmination of a years-long dream for him.

Midway wins Kershaw County Conservation District Competition

Midway Elementary School students were recently honored for their hard work in the "Where Does Your Watershed" poster competition, sponsored by the Kershaw Conservation District. Johnathan Gullard won first place in the fourth and fifth grade category, Sophia Watford won second, and Nick Jones won third. Maggie Carter received honorable mention. In the second and third grade category, Juan Sanchez received honorable mention. The first through third place winners all received cash awards. Gullard went onto the state competition. ‘Chemo with Style’ event in Camden

"Chemo with Style" will be held Jan. 13 at Roxie Hart Salon, 1025 Broad St., in Camden. The event is free of charge to women undergoing chemotherapy. Phillips joins C-I

Gary Phillips is the latest addition to the Chronicle-Independent newsroom. Phillips began working Monday as the C-I's county reporter. In that role, he will cover Kershaw County Council meetings, economic development issues and the town of Bethune. Phillips is also acting as the C-I's crime reporter, crafting the paper's weekly crime report, reporting on major crimes and law enforcement activities and covering significant court proceedings.
