Last Garden Lecture program at Archives

Imagine being a little boy growing up at the Hobkirk Inn when its formal gardens, designed by Scottish landscape architect James Crammond, were in their prime. The garden was laid out in a large rectangle with wide paths to run down and nooks and crannies in which to play hide and seek. Tall cherry laurel, or mock orange, arches framed the entrances to the parterre garden and beyond them lay the wide open land and woodlands of the Hobkirk Inn, which encompassed 34.75 acres in its early years. Yesteryear - June 20, 2012

Photo cutline -- A stiff upper lip -- Bethune Elementary School Principal Doby Gordon recently sported a clean-shaven upper lip for the first time in seven years. BES students Timothy Smith, Brandie Freeman and Brad Freeman earned the honor of shaving Gordon's mustache off for having read the most books during the 1991/92 school year. The trio read between 11 and 13 books each. Gordon's mustache is already growing back in.

Don't vote for supporters of 'sham tax'

Those voters, aka taxpayers, that attended the Kershaw County Council meeting to protest the idea that the Sheriff's Department would be downgraded to Kershaw County Police astounded the members of council to the extent this idea was abandoned. This is not to be left laying around. Don't be surprised if this move becomes a part of another move or to be brought before council to vote on again.

Sheriff responds to firearms discharge ordinance decision

The committee to study whether or not Kershaw County should enact some type of firearms discharge ordinance finally came back with its finding. As I fully expected, there will be no ordinance of any kind to deal with this growing problem. William Tetterton, a criminal defense attorney, former prosecutor and friend of mine chaired this committee. Mr. Tetterton was against any kind of firearms discharge ordinance from the beginning, so it seems a little disingenuous that a man who was strongly opposed to any firearms discharge ordinance would chair a panel deciding on whether or not one should be enacted.
