Funeral services for Thomas Earl Rasberry, 70, will be held Monday at 12:00 p.m. at El-Bethel Faith Community Church, with burial to follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The Rev. Joe Stines and The Rev. Dr. Charles Everett will officiate. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service from 11-12 at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Down Syndrome Association of the Low Country in honor of his granddaughter Breanna.

Pet talk - Sept. 2, 2013

Everyone gets frightened of something or someone from time to time, and animals are no exception. Fear is an emotional response to danger and causes our survival instincts to kick into high gear. Even the most loving and docile of pets can lash out when put in a threatening situation, and the results can often be dangerous. Noted and passed - Sept. 2, 2013

• We voters here in Kershaw County and across the country can get ready for another debt-limit controversy in October. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew is already warning of rattled financial markets if the vote to call the government to borrow more money doesn't pass smoothly, and there will be Republicans who say they won't go along. This is becoming a tiresome exercise and it would be nice if Congress would adopt reasonable fiscal policies that would help avoid this kind of mess.

KCSD receives $400,000 USDOE counseling grant

The Kershaw County School District (KCSD) recently received a nearly $400,000 U.S. Department of Education grant to expand its counseling services for elementary and middle school students. Kershaw County is the only school district in South Carolina and one of only 35 across the nation to be awarded a grant as part of a $12.3 million program to establish or expand counseling services.

A Little known Civil War ‘Affair’ at Flat Rock

As a part of the centennial of the Civil War, in 1959 the South Carolina Archives Department published Military and Naval Operations in South Carolina, 1860-65. In the portion of the book treating Sherman's march through South Carolina, the department named a military action with little or no combat, an "Affair." That name describes this event at Flat Rock.
