Morgan: Moving targets

In the almost 40 years I've spent in public education, I have seen a lot of change. When I started in 1975, schools had rotary dial phones, duplicating was done with purple ditto machines, dry erase boards had not replaced chalkboards, special education was a brand new and somewhat unknown mandate, many girls sports were in their infancy, attendance was done in paper registers, and computers and the internet were barely on the horizon. (OK, OK. I won't say that we walked to school uphill both ways barefoot in the snow…)

Rich: Doing public relations when it’s too late

A few years back, someone I knew ever so slightly died. Though I didn't know him well, I knew him to be mean, egotistical and quite a bully.

Noted and passed - Feb. 16, 2015

• Thank goodness KershawHealth and Kershaw County came to an agreement on the county's taking over emergency management services (EMS). When its deal with Capella Healthcare closes -- likely by March 31 -- KershawHealth will pay $2.636 million for EMS to become a county-provided service starting July 1. In exchange, the county is giving up all interest in any KershawHealth real estate and other property. As we recently said, any other outcome would have been disastrous for county residents, since it could have threatened to kill the Capella deal. Instead, the way has been smoothed for Capella to operate KershawHealth with ...

Beckham: The local Valentine, Cupid

WWII brought about the greatest migration of U. S. citizens. Millions joined the Armed Forces and went to training facilities outside of their local area and many were transferred overseas, while the need for mass production moved countless citizens to new locales to find jobs in industry.

Letter: Reader worries about 4-way stop

I can half-way understand the 4-way stop at the corner of York and Mill streets since there is a blind, uphill snake curve on the east end of York Street which is a 30 degree RW from Mill Street to Hwy. 34. The west end of York Street, from Mill Street to Broad Street is a 90 degree RW.

Planting trees

Howard Wallace (left) of the Camden Tree Foundation helps Benjamin Garcia plant one of 31 new trees Jan. 29 along the northeastern edge of Springdale Race Course as Anthony Haggins uses heavy equipment to prop it up. Among the 4- to 5-year-old trees are 20 cherry bark oaks, six hollies and five "fringe trees," Wallace said. The foundation spent $15,000 on the trees and another $5,000 on irrigation. The foundation planted many of the trees along S.C. 97 opposite the Edgewood subdivision, with more on Springdale Drive itself. Wallace said some Edgewood residents came out expressing their ...
