On Jan. 1, the Miss Lake Wateree Scholarship Organization hosted a Polar Bear Plunge at the Retreat at Colonel Creek on Lake Wateree. Participants plunged into the icy waters of Lake Wateree, competing for prizes such as biggest splash, best costumes and biggest charitable contribution.
The Little Miss and Teen Miss Camden-Kershaw County pageant was held Nov. 17. All winners are eligible to compete in the Little Miss South Carolina pageant to be held in July in Hartsville. As the calendar turns to an election year here in South Carolina, all the usual political suspects are starting to offer up all the usual political rhetoric to try to win your vote, with one side telling you that our state's current economic forecast is cloudy with a chance of Armageddon, and the other insisting that prosperity, or at least whatever passes for it these days, is right around the corner.

As of today, three public officials have decided not to seek reelection. Several days ago, Kershaw County Councilman Stephen Smoak said he would not run again. Today, Kershaw County Coroner Johnny Fellers and Kershaw County Probate Judge Harriett Pierce announce they are not running for reelection, either.
Lugoff-Elgin Middle School qualified nine and Camden Middle School had a pair who punched their ticket into the 2014 Carolina Invitational wrestling tournament following this past Saturday's qualifier held at White Knoll High School.
After leading the Francis Marion University mens' basketball team to a dramatic overtime victory over Armstrong Atlantic State, Camden native Evrik Gary has been named the Francis Marion University Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Jan. 5.
