• USAirways, which has a major hub in Charlotte, is making a play for American Airlines, which is in bankruptcy, cutting a deal with American's unions that will give USAirways a step up in the merger it seeks. For Kershaw County travelers who choose to fly out of Charlotte rather than subject themselves to the restrictions of Columbia's limited flight schedules, that would be a great improvement, and we hope USAirways is able to pull its deal off.

Lugoff business donates three tons of food to Christian Community Ministries

This tax season, Wateree Business & Tax service offered a $25 discount on tax returns when clients donated five pounds of food to Christian Community Ministries. With the help of their customers, the Lugoff business has donated more than three tons of food since last year. This season, Wateree Business & Tax has donated 3,471 pounds of food, with a few more drops-offs scheduled. A box of food for the needy from CCM weighs about 30 pounds. A sign of honor

Community members gathered April 17 at Boykin Park for the unveiling of a new Monroe Boykin historic marker. The park was named in honor of Boykin, who was born into slavery but became a community leader after the Civil War. He went on to help form Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Camden and served as its first pastor. Family members were present to unveil the marker which is located on the Campbell Street side of the park. Now the rubber meets the road

November 4 is past, and statewide elections have been decided. As I have discussed in earlier columns, I am always intrigued, and even a little amused, with the amount of rhetoric that is aimed at education during election time. Now that the votes have been cast, there are a lot of important educational issues hanging in the air that will need to be resolved by newly elected office holders. The decisions made will have significant and lasting impact.
