People who truly care

Recently, Camden lost a wonderful lady. Alanna C. Shepherd passed away at KershawHealth hospital. My grandmother suffered a massive stroke and after some time spent in the ICU, she was then sent to the Hospice floor. The care that she received was incredible. Everyone treated "Nana" so nicely. They treated her with dignity and respect. Robin, who came in the room to make Nana more comfortable, was so, so sweet to her. She talked to her the entire time she was in the room. Jim and Cathy were angels to my family and Nana. They both truly display a caring ...

Rap in class

In an effort to improve literacy at Lugoff-Elgin Middle School, students spent the last 30 minutes of each day in enrichment. For several weeks, students read aloud "The Bully" and participated in activities related to the book. Students kept a journal and discussed the book with their teacher. A few students in Lynn Weeks class – including Kedar Jennings, Parker Gogan and Ryan Bland -- decided to "rap" the story to their classmates. It was exciting to see every student actively engaged and participating during the activities.

Healing the community

County Councilman Stephen Smoak is to be commended for his comments, on recreation facilities, at the Jan. 24th council meeting. Based on what he and the chairman of council said, I believe Councilman Smoak understands both the recreational and economic needs of the community. I believe that the members of the County Council Recreation Committee will also support a cooperative effort with the City of Camden to provide new and improved recreation facilities.

School News: Westville’s Aly Bolin named to Auburn 2013-14 Dean’s List

Aly Bolin, of Westville, was named to the Dean's List of Auburn University for the 2013-2014 academic year. Aly is now a senior majoring in Political Science with a minor in Community and Civic Engagement. Aly was a participant in Auburn's Research Week 2014. Aly will complete her Honors College senior thesis this fall, under Dr. Stacey Hunt. Aly was recently named an Auburn University College of Liberal Arts Fellow and is a two-time Auburn Leadership in Political Science nominee.
