Sunday alcohol sales

Kershaw County Council was scheduled last night to hold first reading on an ordinance which would allow Sunday alcohol sales in the county. Both the towns of Camden and Elgin have in past years changed their laws to allow Sunday sales, and businesses in unincorporated areas are now left at a disadvantage in not being able to match those sales.

Camden teller named SAFE Teller of the Year

SAFE Federal Credit Union recently recognized Dee Dee Cannon, of the credit union's Rutledge Street branch in Camden, as its Teller of the Year. SAFE honored Cannon during its annual Staff Training and Recognition Day in February. During the ceremony, the credit union recognizes "the best of the best" in different job categories, along with awards for sales, volunteerism, service, and leadership.

Phillips receives award from Pageland school

Chronicle-Independent (C-I) staff reporter Gary Phillips recently received a 2013-2014 community service award from Central High School in Pageland. Phillips received the award for supporting Central Eagles athletics while serving as editor of The (Pageland) Progressive Journal. Although Phillips did not attend the event, Central officials announced the award during its Fall Athletic Awards night at the school Feb. 18.

Funeral service for Vernell Douglas Cain, 80, will be held Thursday at 3:00 p.m. at First Assembly Church of God with burial to follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The Rev. Bruce Marthers will officiate. The family will receive friends Wednesday 5-7 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home, Lugoff.

Harold Joseph McNinch, Jr. of Simpsonville, SC passed away on March 7, 2014. He was born in Camden, SC on March 18, 1947. He was the son of Elizabeth W. McNinch and the late Harold J. McNinch.
