Sheriff McCaskill honored
Retiring Kershaw County Sheriff Steve McCaskill was awarded the Order of the Silver Crescent by Gov. Mark Sanford for his service to the community and South Carolina. He was nominated for the award – the highest civilian honor for community service -- by S.C. Rep. Lester P. Branham, who represents Florence County. Waffle House fire
Around 9:40 p.m. Dec. 22, the Lugoff Fire Department (LFD) was dispatched to a structural fire at the Waffle House restaurant on U.S. 601 in Lugoff. Ladder 10 and Engine 10 arrived on the scene to find a light smoke haze throughout the inside of the restaurant and all occupants evacuated, according to LFD Chief Dennis K. Ray. Ben Collins
Funeral Services for Ben T. Collins, 67, of Elgin, will be held Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Ken Jackson and Rev. Jerry Lewis will officiate. The family will receive friends Wednesday 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation.
Charles L. Gotto
Charles L. Gotto (Chuck) died Christmas morning, of Nazareth, Penn. and Camden, S.C., at 8:25 two days after his 94 birthday at Cool Springs Place,in Franklin Tennessee. Charles and his wife Mary had been living in Brentwood,Tennessee with their daughter,Ouida and son-in-law,Buzz Arledge since November 3,where Mary will continue to reside. A memorial service and burial in Quaker Cemetery will take place at a later date.

William"Will" Nolan Roseborough, Jr, age 22, of Lugoff died Sunday evening December 26, 2010 at Providence Northeast Hospital. Will was born May 8, 1988 in Columbia, SC. He was the son of William Nolan (Bill) Roseborough of Columbia and Paula Britt Roseborough of Lugoff. He attended Columbia schools and resided in Lugoff, SC at the time of his death. Hayes Creek Skateboarding Competition
There will be a skateboarding competition Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in the Hayes Creek Subdivision in Elgin. The event is sponsored by Salty's Board Shop in Columbia. The proceeds from the competition will go towards purchasing skateboarding gear for the park in an effort to keep kids off of drugs and keep them off of the streets.
Dog’s human mom experiences drama at local dog park
Dear Annie: I have an 8-month-old puppy, and I take her to a local dog park so she can run off leash and play with the other dogs, which she loves. In the three months I have been taking her, "Phoebe" has never been attacked or fought with another dog. That was until last night, when Phoebe approached another dog that was on a leash and that dog attacked her.
