Sequester

The government sequester which is set to take place next week unless Congress can agree on budgetary matters has been a source of countless news reports. In simple terms, it's a way of dealing with government spending cuts, and it's newsworthy -- and imminent -- because of the failure of Congress to come to an agreement on fiscal policy. It's looming now because the "fiscal cliff" agreement made not long ago didn't solve the country's spending problems.

Samuel Wiley Goodwin Sr.

Mr. Samuel Wiley Goodwin, Sr., 70, of Camden, entered into eternal rest of Friday, Feb. 15, 2013. Born in Camden, he was the son of the late Abraham, Sr. and Julia Thompson Goodwin and the husband of the late Mattie Cotton Goodwin. A Celebration of Life Services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, at Broom Hill Baptist Church, with burial in church cemetery, Rembert. Mr. Goodwin will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. for viewing. Brown's Funeral Home, Camden, is serving the Goodwin family.

Miller Orchestra still going strong

Reading your article recently about Paul Tanner it appears from your last paragraph that you think the Glenn Miller Orchestra is no more. To the contrary. It is still the number one big band in the world. They travel worldwide. They were recently in Asheville N.C. at the Grove Park Inn's "Big Band Weekend" along with the Tommy Dorsey Band. Nick Hilscher is the current Director. Nick is from Atlanta, Georgia.

Recovering drug addict needs parent’s support and trust

Dear Annie: I am a 19-year-old heroin addict striving toward recovery. I go to five Narcotics Anonymous meetings a week, but I have occasional setbacks. After the most recent incident, I left drug paraphernalia in the bathroom. I took full responsibility and was ashamed and disgusted with myself. But the first thing my mother said was, "Did you leave that out on purpose so your sister could find it and start experimenting? She's only 13!"
