Yousef’s story

WASHINGTON -- The Israeli soldier shot Yousef Bashir in the back in the front yard of his father's house in Gaza. It was Feb. 18, 2004, a week after Yousef's 15th birthday. The bullet splintered into three fragments, severing nerves near the teenager's spine.

Althea Floyd Garrison, 90, formerly of Georgetown, S.C., died Saturday, July 12, 2014, in Columbia. She will be buried on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. in Lake City Memorial Park, Lake City, S.C. A memorial service to honor her life will be held at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church in Georgetown on a day and time in August to be determined. The family will receive friends there prior to the service at the church.

Obama and race

Attorney General Eric Holder's recent statement that race plays a part in some Americans' opposition to President Obama's policies has stirred strong reaction from both liberals and conservatives, and reaction has highlighted the fact -- no surprise here -- that blacks and whites often look at issues of race differently. We suspect that Kershaw County would mirror the national opinions of a recent Gallup poll in which people were asked whether this country's criminal justice system is biased against blacks. More than two-thirds of whites said no, while about the same percentage of blacks said yes.
