Partisan rancor

We've bemoaned on many occasions the incivility and partisan rancor of today's political scene, but we can't lay all the blame at the feet of the candidates and office-holders. If the electorate demanded more bipartisanship and more decency during campaigning, candidates would bend to those desires. But as we're seeing as the presidential race heats up, it's often members of the audience who ratchet up ill feelings.

The Camden Royals boys' AAU basketball team will hold a car wash and fish fry in front of the Title Max office at 1031 West DeKalb Street in Camden on Saturday, June 23. The fundraiser for the team, made up of players from Kershaw and Lee Counties, will run from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Parents arrested in child sex abuse case

Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) investigators arrested a Lugoff couple after learning that a man sexually abused his two daughters. According to a statement released to the press Monday afternoon, investigators arrested Michael Dwight Browning, 36, and his 33-year-old wife, Kelly Marie Browning. The KCSO said Michael Browning allegedly abused his daughters sexually, one when she was between the ages of 8 and 14, the other when she was between 7 and 9 years of age. Investigators said they arrested Kelly Browning because she knew of the abuse more than six years ago and did nothing about it. Investigators ...

Editorial: KershawHealth deal

If people in Kershaw County had their druthers, they'd probably prefer that KershawHealth, the facility that grew out of the old Kershaw County Memorial Hospital, would be locally owned. But in a day when consolidation and economies of scale are bywords, it finally became impossible, and KershawHealth trustees voted unanimously Monday night to sell the hospital to a company partnered by Capella Healthcare of Tennessee and the Medical University of South Carolina. A caveat: some might argue with the word "sell," since the transaction is a complicated arrangement, but in essence, that's what it is.
