As I noted in my column last month, the ultimate objective for KershawHealth is providing quality care for all the people in this community, and one of the biggest factors affecting our success in that endeavor is local support for this hospital. Do people in the community trust and value what KershawHealth offers enough to make it their first choice for care?
The Kershaw County Board of School Trustees voted recently to hire Camden native Steve Abbott as the district's new professional development director. Abbott replaces John Gardner, who recently retired.

Due to the recent snow and ice storm, the Lee County Historical Society cancelled its Feb. 11 meeting. The guest speaker for that meeting, Mr. Isaac Joe, has been rescheduled for the March meeting on Tuesday.

The West Wateree Rotary announces the first inaugural Wild Game Dinner and Silent Auction the evening of April 5 at Old McCaskill Farm in Rembert to raise money for graduating Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS) seniors. Club President Amy Schofield describes the event as "down-home and delicious," with wide support from the community. "I'm particularly excited by how we will be showcasing local talent. Hunters in our club provided the game, local musicians will provide the blue grass, and a wonderful local farm will be providing a great setting and a great cook."
The Camden Junior Welfare League (CJWL) is now accepting applications for grant money to be awarded to 501 (c) (3) organizations specifically dealing with children in the Kershaw County area. Grants range from $250.00 to $2,500.00.

COL Hudson Rupert Hurst, USA, (ret), passed away peacefully in Camden, South Carolina on February 1, 2014. He was 95 years of age.
Randolph Withers Kirkland, Jr. of Camden, SC, died March 7, 2014. He was born in Camden, SC, September 1, 1920, son of Randolph Withers Kirkland and Louise Richardson Kirkland. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Walker Kirkland; daughters, Mary Richardson Kirkland of Seattle, WA, Lucinda Walker Kirkland of Camden, SC and Fredericka Kirkland Arthur of San Diego, CA. He was predeceased by a son, Randolph Withers Kirkland III; brothers, Joseph Lane Kirkland and Thomas Jefferson Kirkland; and sisters, Mary Kirkland Reynolds and Katherine Kirkland Crockett.
Elizabeth Elkins Pitman, 98, died March 7, 2014 at The Cottages at Brushy Creek in Greenville, South Carolina. Born September 6, 1915 in Waycross, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late James Samuel Elkins and Mary Bartlett DeFord Elkins.
