Dalton rides Pierrot Lunaire to win in Lonesome Glory Stakes

Mary Ann Houghland's Pierrot Lunaire jumped to the lead before the final fence of Belmont Park's $150,000 Lonesome Glory Stakes (Gr. 1) and held off a determined late charge by Spy in the Sky to win by a nose last Thursday. Charminster finished third in the kickoff race of American Steeplechasing's fall championship season.

A visit with Coota Montgomery

That morning, a piano tune from boyhood days echoed down the halls of Pinedale, a senior citizens care facility located near Camden. As we drew abreast of the piano player's room, there sat Neva Shannon ("Coota") Montgomery with her near 100-year-old, yet nimble fingers "tickling the ivories" into the song "Jesus Loves Me."

• Singer Andy Williams, who died last week at the age of 84, had one of those soothing voices that left people feeling better about everything. His signature song, "Moon River," came from the 1961 movie "Breakfast At Tiffany's" and carried him to stardom, though he had many other hits. He was one of the original acts in Branson, Mo., and performed until shortly before his death. He will be missed in the music world.

March to end sexual violence and child abuse held in Camden

Rosalyn Moses, executive director of the Family Resource Center (FRC), addresses a crowd in front of the Kershaw County Courthouse on April 18 following a march to end sexual violence and child abuse. The march began at The Price House and ended at the courthouse where awards were presented to recipients who help in the fight against these issues.
