During the 1730s, when the Township Plan was devised to entice interior settlement via offers of free land (Fredericksburg, later Camden, being one), a group of Welsh Baptists from New Jersey were granted land to settle either side of the Pee Dee River. The settlement became known as the Welsh Tract. Johannes Kolb, a German farmer who had emigrated to New Jersey in 1704, was among those who acquired land in the tract in the late 1730s.
