Heavy rains, lightning cause flooding, fires

At least 3 inches of rain fell in Kershaw County on Tuesday as about an hour-long storm brought heavy rains and frequent lightning strikes. Camden Public Works Director Tom Couch said a rain gauge at the city's parking lot measured 3.2 inches of rain Tuesday.

Fighting two diseases

Two horrific diseases have been brought into the spotlight recently -- ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, which has caught the public eye through an "ice bucket challenge," and depression, brought into further consciousness through the tragic suicide of actor/comedian Robin Williams. Attention in such matters is always beneficial, both in terms of raising money to fight the diseases and in making Americans more aware of the challenges of such maladies.

Taming the wilderness

I jokingly call my backyard "the wilderness." My house, built in 1912, sits fairly close to my downtown street, as is the custom in the Historic District in Sumter. The Victorian cast iron fence and neat little patch of grass in my front yard belie what is happening behind my house. Dealing with depression

There is help, there is healing. Many descriptions describe the downward plunge; the things that hold you down and the things that take you out. The common known things are drugs, alcohol -- addictions to things with chemical reactions that are bad for the body. The body is a chemical reaction chamber; all it needs is a catalyst and it's a brand new chemical which can put that nail in your coffin. The reactions or side effects are the worst. It's reaction and then interaction and reaction and maybe interaction again.
