Fundraiser to benefit Elgin Military Salute Monument

The town of Elgin will host a chicken bog fundraiser dinner June 13 from 4-7 p.m. at Blaney Baptist Church's Fellowship Hall. Tikets can be purchased from Elgin Town Hall and the cost is $7.50 per adult and $4 per child (12 and under). You can bring your family and dine in or stop by and pick up a to-go plate. All proceeds raised from this dinner will be used to assist in the construction of the Elgin Military Salute Monument, which is located at Potter Community Park in Elgin. Being female

I learned early that being female was not a blessing. My father, a farmer who wanted all boys, had nine girls and only two boys. His first wife had nine children before she died, five little girls in graves. Few children grew to adulthood in those days. When my mother and father married and had two more children, I remember hearing my mother often tell my brother how proud my father had been to have another son, never mentioning pride in relationship to his final girl.

The federal government, he said, is really good at one thing: writing checks. But when it comes to operational matters, Uncle Sam seems to regularly find new and innovative ways to foul things up.
