Gun permits

In reply to the letter on open carry, it is true that many persons do not apply for a permit because it is a form of registration. The government may not know what type of firearm you have, but they will know, unless you used a borrowed firearm to take a class, that you have a firearm. Many do not want to go through the hassle of reapplying every few years for a permit. At the start of the current shall-issue law instead of the old may-issue law, the anti-gun members in the legislature wanted to make it as inconvenient ...

Organizing for Action

Supporters of President Obama say the ratcheting up of a group called Organizing For Action is simply a way for the president to get his message out and pressure Congress to adopt his agenda. Critics say it's a way for big-money donors and special interest groups to buy access to the White House. Voices across the decades

On the afternoon of February 15, 2013, the famed Beard Collection began to arrive at the Camden Archives and Museum. On March 5, the last large load arrived around 1 p.m. and the archives was a beehive of activity, with police and firemen carrying collection items in from trucks, cars and vans. As our new curator of collections, Rickie Good, and I checked items in, Mr. Beard told stories and related anecdotes about each one while it was being photographed by the police camera man. This significant collection represents many voices through the years it spans -- from 1514 to ...

Mr. Jones’ deplorable attack

After giving much thought to the article "Jones targets KershawHealth at Tuesday KCC meeting" in the February 15, 2013, edition of the Chronicle-Independent, remaining silent is no longer an option. The fact that Mr. Jones voted to approve the purchase of two ambulances for KershawHealth is overshadowed by his deplorable attack on the administration and members of the KershawHealth Board of Trustees.

Fruitful fire

When I was young, I remember arriving home to find Mom's face was awash with concern and intent. She told me there was a fire down in the pinewoods below the neighborhood. We were evacuating. I remember feeling intrigued by it all. The seriousness never set in until some of my closest friends lost their homes to the flames.
