Santa will ride through Lugoff with Lugoff Fire Dept.

The Lugoff Fire Department will have the honor of escorting Santa Claus through the neighborhoods in Lugoff again this year. Santa will be escorted through different areas of the Lugoff Community each night. Lugoff Firefighters enjoy this event each year so children can have the opportunity to see the "Jolly One" before he comes on Christmas Night.

Wagging the Dog

A few months ago, I was talking with a mother of a private school student, and I asked her if she minded telling me why she chose a private school for her child. I've asked this question to numerous private school parents over the years, and I always learn something. But the answer I got in this case was one that I hadn't heard before. This mother said, "I don't want my child to be a test score." She went on to tell me that in her opinion, standardized testing in public schools had become more important ...

Hartis retires

Kershaw County Magistrate Judge Eugene "Gene" Hartis (center) celebrates his retirement Thursday with his family at the Kershaw County Courthouse. Hartis retired Thursday after working at the courthouse for 30 years, 28 as a magistrate judge. Original from North Carolina, Hartis attended Bethune area schools. He said the past 30 years have gone by quickly, and recognized his family, employees and his friend, the late Sen. Donald Holland. Hartis said he remembered when the magistrate's office only collected $189,000 in fines. Last year, the office collected more than $1 million, he said, acknowledging the county's growth in ...

Noted and passed - Dec. 16, 2013

• The Chronicle-Independent offers a tip of its hat to Rigdon Boykin, Ann Bass and everyone at Kimbrell's Furniture on completing renovations to its Camden store. The $350,000 spent on the project isn't just an investment in the store, but an investment in downtown Camden. Camden Mayor Tony Scully called it a "transformational vision, showing us what's possible." We agree, hoping not only that other property owners will upgrade their buildings, but that Kimbrell's lead will entice new businesses and developers to invest in Camden as well.
