CHS hosts two-day holiday hoops camp

The Camden High School boys' basketball program and the Kershaw County Parks and Recreation Department are hosting a two-day, pre-Christmas camp at the school on Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 22 and 23.

Editorial: Court decisions

Two prominent decisions in South Carolina courts this week have been just and fair -- exactly the way most people would like to see the legal system work. The first was a decision by Circuit Court Judge Carmen Mullen to overturn the 1944 conviction of a 14-year-old boy who was sent to the electric chair back in the Jim Crow days of this state for the murder of two girls.

Anytime we, as a county, can truly honor something or someone, a warm feeling can overcome you. This is good. This experience happened Dec. 9, the final (regular) Kershaw County Council meeting of 2014. One had to be there to witness this "proud of you" feeling obviously everyone certainly felt.

Camden Archives and Museum celebrates its centennial

One hundred years ago, in 1915, 1314 Broad St. was a construction site. Excavators and bricklayers, carpenters and heating contractors were busy at their task of building Camden's first city library. It had been an arduous journey getting to that point. That journey began in 1914, as best we can reckon, at a lecture to the Kershaw County Teachers Institute. In all of the factors leading up to the acquisition and completion of the Camden Public Library there is one constant: Sarah "Sadie" Kennedy Von Tresckow.

Recreation Dept. Volleyball league open for registration

The Kershaw County Parks and Recreation Department will host an instructional volleyball league. The league is for beginners and is open for girls ages 8 and up. Registration dates are until December 23. The registration fee is $40 and includes a shirt. The first practice will be January 7, 3:45 p.m. at the City Arena. These animals need a home

Among the animals available for adoption at the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter are Jag, a 2-year-old male coonhound mix and Prudence, a 1-year-old female domestic shorthair cat, The adoption donation includes spaying or neutering. The shelter, located at the south end of Fair Street and managed by the Kershaw County Humane Society, is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. KCSD receives two 21st Century Community Learning Centers grants

The Kershaw County School District (KCSD) is the only South Carolina school district to receive not just one, but two 21st Century Community Learning Centers grants for 2015. Partnering with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands, Jackson School and Pine Tree Hill Elementary School will house afterschool academic assistance programs.
