Tax facts

Voters in Kershaw County and nationwide have been bombarded with news during the past few days regarding the compromise between the Obama administration and Congressional Republicans on tax policy. Democrats in Washington, who for nearly two years have been accusing the GOP of obstructionism, are the people in this instance who are throwing up roadblocks. To listen to them tell it, lower-income Americans are being saddled with a lion's share of the American tax ...

KershawHeath provides outstanding care

Having recently had surgery at KershawHealth, I would like to compliment our hospital and staff. How fortunate we are in Kershaw County to have a facility that provides excellent, compassionate care. What could have been an uncomfortable Thanksgiving Day was actually a pleasant experience thanks to the staff at KershawHealth. Each person I encountered was careful and caring, and each was absolutely committed to the job at hand, and certainly to the patient. As ...

Christmas carols offer more than just a catchy tune

I love this time of the year! Riding through town, seeing the Christmas Lights, and seeing the hustle-and-bustle of holiday shopping, but most of all, I love the Christmas music. I don't know what it is about that type of music, but it seems to always put people in a better mood. After doing some reading on traditional Christmas music, I found some very interesting facts.

A first step

Kershaw County voters, like their counterparts throughout the county, should take heart in the fact that Democrats and Republicans finally came together in Washington Monday to forge what looks to be a workable compromise on economic matters. They came up with a measure that will keep income rates at their current pace for another two years and will also extend unemployment taxes; the measure will also reduce the payroll tax on Social Security, instantly ...

School district should review priorities

As a child I was taught you have certain priorities in life. When you become an adult it still should have a place in your decision-making. The Kershaw County School District's recent vote to spend up to $1.25 million shouldn't even be on the list. As a taxpayer, I think keeping qualified teachers teaching is of more importance.

America's reality show: gloom and doom

NEW YORK -- Pending catastrophe is not an easy notion to entertain, much less sustain. Americans moreover have a low tolerance for doom and gloom. We are the nation of optimism, after all. We elect leaders who promise hope and change. We are the shining city on a hill.

Land purchase for new district offices 'poor decision'

Why would the local school board vote to spend $1.25 million on property for a new district office when they have the land available at both the former Pine Tree Hill School and Camden Middle School properties? How much more money will the new administrative building cost? Is there some other way this money could be spent on children rather than administrative offices?

Yesteryear -- Dec. 8, 2010

20 YEARS AGO -- Dec. 5-10, 1990 Photo cutline -- West Wateree Rotary Club members were among the Adopt-A-Highway litter control volunteers that picked up roadside trash last month. In addition to performing a community service, it paid off for one volunteer who found a $20 bill among aluminum cans, empty fast food containers and cigarette butts. The IRS

There are jokes aplenty about the Internal Revenue Service, but the latest revelations about that agency's conduct in targeting conservative groups is no laughing matter. In reality, it's not about conservative groups or liberal groups or apolitical groups. It's about the abhorrent idea that the IRS would single out any kind of organization or individual to harass -- and indeed it is harassment. <p class="MsoNormal" align="left" style="text-align: left; text-indent: ...
