Camden writer named Artist Fellow

Kathryn Etters Lovatt, of Camden, is one of three women awarded an Individual Artist Fellowship from the S.C. Arts Commission Board. Lovatt, Nancy Ancrom of Columbia and Marcy Jo Yonkey-Clanton of Irmo each received $5,000. Lovatt earned the award for prose writing. Ancrom and Yonkey-Clanton work in poetry and dance choreography, respectively.

Lt. William E. Johnson Jr.

In 2010, Broadus R. Littlejohn, a Spartanburg collector, gave Wofford College a very large collection of books, pamphlets, documents and manuscripts. Among his gift were more than two dozen Civil War letters and a diary Lt. William E. Johnson Jr. of Liberty Hill kept from May 1864 until June 1865 while he was a Union prisoner-of-war.

It is rare that a minister remains at one church that long, and Hancock has carved out an enviable record at the county's largest church, with a great deal of growth (and spiritual nutrition) taking place.

Funeral services celebrating the life of Robert Matthew "Bobby" Downey, 56, of Camden, will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, July 30, 2012 at St. Timothy's Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Reverend Angela Jennings and Reverend David Weaver will officiate. The family will receive friends from 5-7PM Sunday, July 29, 2012 at Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel. Funeral service for Lorene Bernice Branham Thomas, 90, will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Wateree Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. KC Library updates website

Earlier this month, visitors to the Kershaw County Library website saw a change. A pretty big change. The Library updated its website in an effort to improve and promote its digital side. Created by Columbia-based Cyberwoven, and funded in part through a grant from the Central Carolina Community Foundation, the new site promotes events and programs while making digital resources easier to navigate.

My quest for 'commonsense' gun laws

In the wake of the Colorado catastrophe, in which a maniac shooter killed at least a dozen people in a theater showing the latest Batman movie, everyone seems to be calling for "commonsense" gun laws. Unfortunately it's hard to tell whose sense is common enough these days.
