Half-day schedule will kick off school break
The Kershaw County School District will have a half day for students on Dec. 17, the last day of student attendance before the holiday break. Staff will work a regular schedule. Students in developmentally delayed and 4-year-old kindergarten classes will not attend. SEAGUL classes will not be held.
Christmas carols offer more than just a catchy tune
I love this time of the year! Riding through town, seeing the Christmas Lights, and seeing the hustle-and-bustle of holiday shopping, but most of all, I love the Christmas music. School district should review priorities
As a child I was taught you have certain priorities in life. When you become an adult it still should have a place in your decision-making. The Kershaw County School District's recent vote to spend up to $1.25 million shouldn't even be on the list. As a taxpayer, I think keeping qualified teachers teaching is of more importance.

Land purchase for new district offices 'poor decision'
Why would the local school board vote to spend $1.25 million on property for a new district office when they have the land available at both the former Pine Tree Hill School and Camden Middle School properties? How much more money will the new administrative building cost? Is there some other way this money could be spent on children rather than administrative offices?

The voices of youth
The Doby's Mill Elementary School Choraliers -- a part of the Kershaw County Elementary Honors Choir, directed by Dr Susan Wyatt -- recently took part in an event jointly sponsored by the University of South Carolina and Colla Voce, a vocal chamber ensemble of professional musicians in the Columbia area. Elementary and middle schools from around the state were hosted at the event, where students sang in English and Latin.

Josephine G. Warner
Mrs. Josephine G. Warner, age 90, of Lugoff, SC, (formerly of Clarksburg,WV) passed away Saturday, May 11, 2013 at Myrtle Beach Manor in Myrtle Beach, SC, following an extended illness. She was born in Philippi, WV, August 14, 1922, a daughter of the late Herbert Edward Golden and Grayce Booth Golden.
Jak Smyrl collection purchased by USC library
The University of South Carolina (USC) Libraries is now home to a collection of more than 5,000 images, plus correspondence, sketchbooks, and even early elementary-school artwork Camden's Oscar Jackson "Jak" Smyrl, The State newspaper's first staff artist, who passed away in 2007.
CHS to honor student-athletes at banquet
