‘My name is Kershaw County’

My name is Kershaw County. I am located in the state of South Carolina and I possess approximately 740 square miles, and I claim to have approximately 60,000 citizens that live in me. I have a lot to boast about, so much that I cannot begin to tell of them. I am proud of my citizens and I depend on them to make me what I am. I am only as good as my people. That I know!

The swing set

I tore down the old swing set last weekend, demolished it actually. I unscrewed as many nuts and bolts as I could and then took the saw to it, leaving only the pile of sand which had broken the fall of many a crying or giggling toddler at the base of the sliding board. It was time. The old structure had become a little "shop of horrors," so to speak. There were several rungs missing from the ladder, there were damaged boards everywhere, the swings had become rusty and unreliable. She was tired.

Nancy Whitney Gerry

Nancy Whitney Gerry, 95, of Boca Grande, Florida, and Fishers Island, New York, died peacefully September 26th in Englewood, Florida. Born March 26th, 1917, she attended the Brearley School in New York City, and the Foxcroft School in Middleburg, Virginia. Henry Averell Gerry, her husband of 60 years, preceded her in death in 2000. They lost their son, Averell, in 1960.

CCU athletic hallway named for trustee Duke Brown

Robert Duke Brown of Camden, a longtime Coastal Carolina University (CCU) trustee, was recently honored with the naming of the "Robert Duke Brown Hall of Champions" in the University's Adkins Field House. The hallway, which connects the George F. "Buddy" Sasser Hall of Fame to the building's Football Suite, was named for Brown to recognize his staunch advocacy and support of CCU's football program.

While the high school teams in this area are going through a rough patch, the state's two flagship football programs -- South Carolina and Clemson -- are having banner seasons that could lead to the ultimate rivalry game Nov. 24 when the two teams will meet.
