Can these trees be saved?

Through research, site evaluations and help from structural engineers, arborists are learning more and more about the how's and why's of a tree's ability to stand and fall. Many different factors are at work affecting the strength and structure of trees. A tree falls over or a branch breaks due to one basic fact: the force affecting it is greater than the strength of it. For example, when the force of the wind is stronger than the strength of the root system which holds the tree in place, it will fall.

Among the animals available for adoption at the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter are Carver, a very sweet and quiet Chihuahua mix and a female Tabby cat. The adoption donation includes spaying or neutering. The shelter, located at the south end of Fair Street and managed by the Kershaw County Humane Society, is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Stay focused on fire safety, prevention

In 1923, at a small school house near Camden known as the Cleveland School, more than 300 people gathered for a graduation night celebration and play. At 9 p.m., one of the oil lanterns fell onto the stage and within minutes the school was engulfed in flames. Seventy-seven people lost their lives that night. During the past 100 years, we have made great strides in implementing fire codes and regulations to protect our citizens; but we must remain diligent.
