Mary Ellen Ahner Scholarship application deadline Friday

The Camden-Lugoff Elk's Lodge No. 2603 is accepting applications from Kershaw county students for the Mary Ellen Ahner Scholarship Program. The lodge will be awarding two $1,000 scholarships to local students who plan to pursue a career in education. The application deadline is Friday. State needs to meet legal obligations

I was very interested in the issue raised by Camden City Council member Alfred Mae Drakeford at the recent (Kershaw County) Chamber (of Commerce) legislative forum. Ms. Drakeford correctly stated that the state of South Carolina is not providing the legally required level of funding for local governments. I would point out that our state is also falling well short in terms of its legal obligation for the funding of public schools.

By the time you read this, a group of United States Senators will likely have introduced the first significant proposal on immigration reform in more than 20 years. While it is far too early to comment on its content -- the group has been fairly secretive as to details -- the simple fact that such a high profile group will be offering a proposal is noteworthy. Camden Archives and Museum earns award for Doby exhibit

The Camden Archives and Museum received an Award of Achievement at the S.C. Federal of Museums' (SCFM) annual meeting, held in March in Greenwood. The award recognized the "excellent utilization of resources and professionalism" for the archives' "Camden's Baseball Hall of Famer: Larry Doby" exhibit and associated programming. The exhibit ran from July 2 to Dec. 31, 2012, in the Whitely Room and drew much praise from those who viewed it.
