Rep. Todd Akin

Republican leaders from Mitt Romney on down are urging Rep. Todd Akin of Missouri to withdraw from his U. S. Senate race against Claire McCaskill; it's a seat the GOP hopes to win in its effort to control the Senate. Akin, of course, is the one who made ridiculous statements about rape during a campaign appearance. He's being urged by nearly every Republican bigwig from Romney to Karl Rove to Sen. John Cornyn, chairman of the Senate Campaign Committee, to step down.

The 24-7 school district

I've been doing this work for a pretty long time. The coming school year will be my 38th, which probably qualifies me for "dinosaur status." A lot has changed in education since I walked into my first classroom in 1975. One of the most significant areas of change has been the way in which schools and school districts interact and communicate with families and the general public.

Noted and passed - Aug. 20, 2012

• The Kershaw County School District has made a good move in establishing a dress code for teachers; that's a subject that has been on the minds of school officials across the country. Teachers must be presentable, and in an age of increasing informality, it's important that students be able to look up to the person running the classroom. Inappropriate appearance detracts from the effectiveness of teachers.

I don't like lies

Personally I don't like lying! I made remarks to my brother (now deceased) about Obama lying during the last presidential campaign! His answer was politicians have been lying since the very beginning of politics! This may be true! My mom told me many years ago, (be sure your sins will find you out). I don't like lies or lying and would not vote for a Democrat often as I know now!

Paul Ryan's magical thinking

Among other "awesome news" about Paul Ryan, as my son would call it, we have learned that Mitt Romney's running mate was voted prom king and "biggest brown noser" by his high school classmates. Obviously, he was destined for success in politics.
