‘It’s a WHAT?’

There are rewards for diligence. We have been rearranging the collections storage stacks at the Camden Archives and Museum for the past month. Three of us going through each box, each folder, each book and object making sure that it is listed in the collections database correctly. My task is to check the oversized materials -- the things that need to go in a map case and the large books stashed around the stacks. It's not scintillating work but it has to be done -- so we plod through one more stack of books and the next shelf of storage boxes ...

Pets of the Week - June 19, 2013

Among the animals available for adoption at the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter are Kale, a 2-year-old male Shi-Tzu mix dog, and Georgette, a 1-month-old female cat. The adoption donation includes spaying or neutering. The shelter, located at the south end of Fair Street and managed by the Kershaw County Humane Society, is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. It's time once again to sign up for the Kershaw County Recreation Department's (KCRD) fall sports programs. The registration fee is $32 for football, soccer, baseball and soccer, and includes insurance. The registration fee for cheerleading is $25 and includes a uniform and insurance.

Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews (left) receives his first-place S.C. Sheriff's Association (SCSA) pistol match trophy from Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott. The competition is held every year at the SCSA's summer conference. This year, the SCSA held the pistol match at the Myrtle Beach Police Department's indoor firearms training facility, located at the old Myrtle Beach Air Force base. Competitors, all of whom are South Carolina sheriffs, competed in a timed combat-type course which required speed and accuracy. A Waggly Tails cookout

Piggly Wiggly of Camden raised $3,624 during its two-day Waggly Tails cookout last recently. The community came together and the ribs, chicken and hot dogs were completely sold out by the end of the day on Saturday. Several dogs were also adopted during the event, including Dixie by John Jackson; Drake by Jessica Marsh and her son, James; and a yet to be named dog by Kaitlyn Anderson. We're aware, of course, that in an age of terrorism and violence, law enforcement officials need all the help they can get in dealing with potential incidents. The recent bombing at the Boston Marathon is yet another piece of evidence that people with ill intent can strike at any time. And one of the factors that led to that crime being solved was the presence of security cameras in the area.

Mr. John Thomas "Buddy" Tucker, Sr., 73, of 1539 Smyrna Road, Elgin died Monday. Family and friends may call at the residence. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced at a later date by Brown's Funeral Home, Camden, who is serving the Tucker family.
