• We note with sadness the death of South Carolina native Joe Frazier, who was the heavyweight boxing champion of the world during the 1970s and fought memorable bouts with Muhammad Ali. "Smoking Joe" beat Ali and then lost to him in Manila in one of the epic fights of all times. He struggled thereafter with being Ali's whipping post but finally assumed forgiveness for the cruel taunts that Ali rained down on him. Frazier was, by all accounts, a thoroughly decent man, and he earned a spot in boxing history.

Casey, Farmer retain Bethune council seats

Incumbents Joe Casey and Beverly Farmer retained their seats on Bethune Town Council. In votes cast Nov. 8 at Bethune Town Hall, Casey received 78 votes followed by Farmer with 71, according to the Kershaw County Voter Registration Office.

KCSD exceeds S.C. average on state report cards

In a climate where academic performance targets make significant jumps every three years, 94 percent of the Absolute ratings issued today for Kershaw County schools are Excellent, Good or Average. Statewide, only 84 percent of schools had Absolute ratings of Average or above.

Mr. and Mrs. William J. Demer of Camden announce the engagement of their daughter, Miss Helen Eva Demer of Camden, to Mr. Adam Vicente Romero of Camden. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lauro Romero of Mauldin and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph J. Lantz of Camden.

L-E Demonfest Alumni Reunion

The Alumni of Lugoff-Elgin High School celebrated with a "Demonfest" on Oct. 21- 22. The all-class reunion was kicked off with a meet and greet party at Gadget's in Lugoff. Family Day was held at Doby's Mill Elementary School and the closing reception was held at the Shriners Club on Kershaw Highway on Saturday evening. Classmates Rebecca Nienow, Tammy King Yarbrough, and Nadine Kinard enjoyed the evening together. The reunion coordinator was Chrissy Goff.

Scully returns to FAC with ‘The Voices of Camden, The Quarrel with Oneself’

"The Voices of Camden, The Quarrel with Oneself," the popular Tony Scully workshop in writing and performing dramatic monologues, is back on the boards for the 10th time. This performance will feature some of Tony's favorite monologues from the past and is entitled "My Favorite Monologues." Soon to be a book, this is only a small portion of what will be published in the near future. The performance will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday in the Wood Auditorium. Tickets are $5 at the door.

Funeral services with military honors to honor the life of Thomas D. "Tommy" Horton, 79, of Camden will be held Monday, November 14, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Malvern Hill Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Craig Thompson and Rev. Buster Morris will officiate. The family receive friends Sunday, November 13, 2011 from 3:00 – 4:30 PM at Kornegay Funeral Home Camden Chapel. Memorials may be made in Mr. Horton's memory to Malvern Hill Baptist Church, 1514 Malvern Hill Drive, Camden, SC 29020.

Local artist awarded

Denise L. Greer, an artist from the Boykin area, was awarded $250 for her painting "Hung Out To Dry" during the South Carolina Watermedia Society's award luncheon held Nov. 5 at the Harbor Club in Charleston. Green's work was also chosen to be part of the 2012 Museum traveling show. Each month, for a year, her painting will be exhibited in many South Carolina art museums.
