Chick-fil-A and fried rights

The furor over ‘Fast and Furious’

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder may show up on "Jeopardy!" one of these days. No, not as a contestant. As an answer. The clue: "He's the first attorney general in U.S. history to be held in contempt of Congress." The answer: "Who is Eric Holder?"

Climate change

It comes as no surprise to sweltering Kershaw County residents that July was the hottest month ever in the lower 48 states. Weather figures indicate, too, that the first seven months of 2012 have also set a record for heat. Compounding the situation is what weather scientists call "extremes" -- events such as radical high and low temperatures, droughts, downpours, vicious storms and the like. They are on the upswing, and they're no fun for the people involved where they occur.

Tired of gay rights fight

I think you should print the fact that some of us are sick to death of hearing about gay rights, what about our rights or don't we have any, they say and do what even they want and its suppose to be OK, but heaven forbid a Christian standing up for what they believe. I am so proud of the Chick-Fil-A man that stood up for what he believed, and I know our Lord and Savior is saying finally. What is wrong with the people of this world? I know our Lord is thoroughly disgusted.

Get off Haley’s back

The House Ethics Committee has cleared Governor Haley of wrong doing a second time. Charges brought this time at the behest of "Citizen Rainey" (so dubbed by this newspaper earlier in the year), and no doubt with the encouragement of the obese senator from Lexington.

Hot flashes

The recent 109 degree temperature made me remember what seemed to be even hotter days. When my younger friends ask me if I ever had hot flashes, I have to laugh. Since I taught in an unair-conditioned school where required apparel was a dress, slip, underwear and stockings I was always in a state of hot flashes. If I ever had a medical hot flash, I do not know. School began in August. In a matter of minutes, not one thread of clothing was dry. In fact, at lunch, when allowed, I went home, took a bath, changed clothes, and ...

‘Lawful concealed weapons welcome here’

Within minutes of the movie theater shooting in Colorado, the news media was on the scene, filming the resulting chaos. One of the cameramen panned across the sign on the front of the theater that said "No Concealable Weapons Allowed." No doubt he was trying to depict the irony of the message in light of the situation.

Reid’s lie

If we tried to count the politicians who have played fast and loose with the truth, it would be an impossible task. The art of embellishment rises to high levels when some candidates and office-holders assess their own abilities and accomplishments. But Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada, the Senate majority leader, has sunk to new levels with his completely unsubstantiated charges against Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

Chick-filA controversy?

In Friday's Chronicle-Independent, Miciah Bennett's column entitled "Chick-Fil-A's stance on gay marriage not surprising" was very well thought-out, well expressed and accurate, in my opinion.
