Thank you for the opportunity to tell the citizens of Camden of the petition drive that is calling for a referendum on the use of hospitality taxes. I have no question that our elected officials are good people with good intentions. Morningside celebrates National Assisted Living Week

National Assisted Living Week began on Grandparents' Day, Sept. 11 and continued until Sept. 17. Many assisted living residents are the people who made significant contributions to the community. They have been the teachers, business people, civic leaders, public officials, parents, and now grandparents, who have contributed so much to the Kershaw County community. This week gives locals a chance to honor these citizens' contributions along with staff, families, friends, and volunteers of the community.

FAC presents ‘Follies’ Beach, Global Village Photographer solo exhibit

The "girls" are hitting the beach in tonight and tomorrow's production of the popular Fine Arts Follies! 16th annual Fire Fest scheduled Saturday

The 16th annual Fire Fest 2011 will take place Saturday at Rhame City Arena in Camden. The event will kick off with a parade at 9 a.m. through downtown Camden. This family event will also include skydivers, vendors, kids' games, food, exhibitors and firefighter competition. The sky divers will enter around 9:45 a.m. and the opening ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. Activities for children will include bounce-arounds, pony rides and games.

Pancake breakfast to be held for L-EHS journalism dept.

The Lugoff-Elgin High School journalism department will host a pancake breakfast at the FATZ in Camden, located at 212 Wall Street on Sept. 24. From 7:30 to 10 a.m. FATZ will open its doors to members of the community and transform into a hotspot for hotcakes to raise money to support the L-EHS journalism department. Proceeds from the breakfast will be used to help the students of the yearbook team pay to attend local and regional scholastic journalism conferences where they can receive in-depth instruction from professionals and nationally recognized journalism teachers.

Bank of America donates money to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

The Young Leadership Committee of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is organizing a poker run to raise money for type 1 diabetes. The poker run, "Hawg-Wild for the Cure," will be held on Oct. 15.

Led by a 1-2 finish from Davis Goodrich and Clark Joseph, the Camden High boys' cross country team ran to a first-place finish in an eight-team meet held last Thursday at North Central High School.

Voter requirements

South Carolina recently passed a law that requires voters to show a photo ID when they go to the polls, and we have said all along those who object to such a move are throwing a red herring into the equation. There's certainly nothing wrong with having people prove who they say they are when they go to exercise the basic right of democracy, and the photo ID law does nothing to prevent people from voting or making it more difficult for them to do so.
