Ten years ago, I strolled into the offices of the Beaufort Gazette around mid-morning. I had been up late covering some government meeting or another, and had slept in, so I really didn't have a clue as to what had happened less than an hour and a half prior.

The numbers are in. They show that workers in Europe have more vacation days than Americans. In Italy, the average worker is allowed 42 days of vacation every year. In France it's 37 days. In the United Kingdom, it's 28 days. The U.S. is near the bottom of the list. People here average 13 days of vacation a year.
