Two bright spots for Camden were revealed in Monday's issue of the Chronicle-Independent, and in an age when bad news seems to dominate -- at least at the national level -- it's worth spotlighting those things again.

Jenkins: Diversity

A couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to join the Martin Luther King walk in Sumter. The truth is, I had the opportunity to join it in the past, too, but I did not. As my grandmother used to say, "Better late than never." Still, as I waited for the walk to begin, I was disappointed in myself for not attending in the past.

Camden Media Co. launches Blythewood Horse & Equestrian magazine

Camden Media Co. announces the launch of The Blythewood Horse & Equestrian magazine. The first issue, its spring edition, will be published March 19 and focus on the Carolina Cup. The magazine will then be published quarterly, in full color, in June, November, January and March.

CCTC publishes president’s, dean’s lists

Central Carolina Technical College (CCTC) President Dr. Tim Hardee has announced Fall 2014 student honors lists. This term, 419 students have been honored, of which 397 are residents of Sumter, Lee, Clarendon or Kershaw Counties. Listed below are Kershaw County students honored on the full- and part-time president's and dean's lists.

Open wide!

Dr. Will Owen looks in the mouth of a Jackson Elementary School student during a dental screening program held at the school Jan. 20. Dr. Owen and the staff of Drs. Moss & Owen provided free screenings to all Jackson students in a little more than two hours, seeing 500 students. The staff worked with Jackson's nurse, Jennifer Reeves, who coordinated the screenings for the students. Drs. Moss & Owen has performed these screenings for more than 15 years to help ensure the children of Kershaw County have access to dental care.

Funeral services to celebrate the life of Arlene Behrens Mosier, 87, of Cassatt, SC, will be held at 4:00 PM today, February 4, 2015 at Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel. Rev. Dean Elliott and Rev. Mary D'Alessio will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service. Burial will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, February 5, 2015 in Cassatt Baptist Church Cemetery. The family suggests those wishing to give a memorial in Arlene's memory may be made to Cassatt Baptist Church, 2604 Hwy 1 North, Cassatt, SC 29032.

Funeral service for Mrs. Janie Joy Lloyd, 90, of 716 Market Street in Camden, will be held Friday, February 6, 2015, 1:00 P.M. at Emmanuel United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Collins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Geddings and Ms. Ngo to wed in June

Mr. and Mrs. Grant Lavern Geddings announce the engagement of their son, Mr. Thomas Hilton Geddings to Miss Linda Ngo. Thomas is the son of Terri and Grant Geddings of Camden. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Hilton Goodrich Jr. of Camden, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Lavern Geddings of Camden and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Howell Stamm of Camden. Thomas served in the US Navy as a submariner on the USS Albany and is currently attending Greenville Technical College in Greenville, South Carolina.
