Anatomy of a flip-flop

WASHINGTON -- When the Democratic National Committee circulates an ad attacking Mitt Romney even before the Iowa caucuses -- and long before his presidential nomination is clear -- one can be fairly certain that Romney is considered the greatest threat to a second Obama term.

The cuts to come

Rep. Jim Clyburn of South Carolina, who was one of 12 members of the so-called Super Committee which recently failed to reach an agreement on deficit reduction, says he opposes the automatic spending cuts which are scheduled to occur because of the committee's failure. The automatic decreases in spending were intended as a sword over the committee's head to make sure the dozen members came together in compromise to do what was best for the country. They -- six Republicans and six Democrats -- didn't do that, and now Clyburn wants to change the rules.

Pay it forward

Giving thanks. Thankfulness. Gratitude. All words that often come to mind during this bountiful season of thanksgiving. Impeccable timing, wouldn't you say? This time of giving thanks leads us right to the season of giving (gifts); the season of giving and receiving and more receiving for some. So, just as I am offering thanks for the gifts I have in my life -- family and friends, food and football -- among many, I catch a glimpse of several headlines reading "Black Friday shopper collapses while shopping and almost goes unnoticed as other shoppers walk over his body to hunt for bargain ...

Camden's YMCA project

I have listened to the vehement objections to the proposed YMCA project that may be built on the former Mather Academy site. The anger that I sense from the opponents to this project is fierce and contentious. They have every right to express their objections vocally and in writing.

An ‘uppity’ outrage

I don't know whose idea it was to send First Lady Michelle Obama to a NASCAR race. But the reaction offers a timely lesson in political correctness, a regime that used to be known simply as good manners.

Historic Camden

A response was made to my recent proposal to City Council about needs Historic Camden has in developing our legitimate existing tourism site for the City of Camden. Needs that easily qualify for state- mandated requirements for hospitality tax usage. The response was, "When I heard one idea of funneling h-tax to Historic Camden I couldn't help but think, 'Here we go again … let's just keep focusing on what we've always done."

Yesteryear -- Nov. 30, 2011

Photo cutline -- Among the cooks on hand for this year's Elgin Catfish Stomp will be chief cook Larry Nelson, flanked on the left by Bill Hughes and on the right by George Marthers. Stomp cooks usually spend all of Friday night cooking up the 600 gallons of catfish stew that will go to Saturday's hungry multitudes.

Cain and Gingrich

Voters in this country are notoriously fickle -- even more so than football fans, and evidence of that can be found in the up-and-down nature of regular polls conducted to see which Republican presidential candidate is doing best. Each week it seems another contender has either caught the fancy of voters and surged to the top of polls or committed some blunder and plummeted like a rock falling off a cliff.

Focused on foreign policy

When the presidential debates between George W. Bush and Al Gore were held in October 2000, the 9/11 attacks were less than a year away. Guess how many times "al Qaeda" or "Osama bin Laden" came up in those debates? Not once.
