Lake safety

With Memorial Day just behind us, the "official season" at Lake Wateree has begun, and between now and Labor Day, thousands of Kershaw County residents will be taking to the lake to enjoy summer fun. Duke Energy recently released a summer safety document, and we'd like to join in urging people to use sound judgment and common sense at the lake, lest recreation turn into tragedy.

City of Camden looks to purchase Ross Beard Gun Collection for $700,000

The city of Camden may spend $700,000 to permanently acquire the Ross E. Beard Jr. Gun Collection, a significant portion of which is already housed at the Camden Archives and Museum. City Attorney Lawrence Flynn, who brought forward a proposal to generate a hospitality fee revenue bond to pay for the collection, said the collection would be "an exciting asset for the city."

Fundraiser to benefit Elgin Military Salute Monument

The town of Elgin will host a chicken bog fundraiser dinner June 13 from 4-7 p.m. at Blaney Baptist Church's Fellowship Hall. Tikets can be purchased from Elgin Town Hall and the cost is $7.50 per adult and $4 per child (12 and under). You can bring your family and dine in or stop by and pick up a to-go plate. All proceeds raised from this dinner will be used to assist in the construction of the Elgin Military Salute Monument, which is located at Potter Community Park in Elgin.
