Dangerous politics

With the country on the brink of a debt default, and with elected officials in Washington locked in combat, it has never been more apparent how fragile the art of compromise is in the nation's capital. Most believe the reason is that for years, members of the Republican and Democratic parties have become more and more polarized, Republicans hewing to the hard right and Democrats to the hard left. There's lots of space to meet in the middle, but Washington pols don't appear interested. This is frustrating to many centrists who believe government shouldn't exist on ...

Some suggestions for federal debt reduction

Start at the top instead of the bottom. President Obama used Air Force One a total of 172 times at an estimated cost of $200 million per flight in 2010. The total will probably be exceeded in 2011. The ex-speaker of the House used a large corporate jet from the same Special Air Mission Flight for weekly jaunts to California. The suggestion would be to cut the federal travel budget in half by only allowing essential travel and no paid travel for campaign contributions.

Keeping free speech alive

I recently posted an article on the Kershaw County Patriots page on Facebook that seems to have stirred up a bit of a controversy. The article was entitled "When is It OK to Shoot a Cop." I asked that anyone who wished to comment on the article read it first. With the exception of myself, no one commented on the article. The page is an open page and all comments are welcome as a way to open a healthy debate. It seems, however, rather than commenting on the article, someone from law enforcement contacted this paper and complained. Why did ...
