Snakes column a good hoax

I would like to thank your contributing editor, Glenn Tucker, for his brilliant article about the S.C. Department of Wildlife's proposal to release poisonous cotton-mouth moccasins into Lake Wateree. This was the best April Fool's joke ever! As I read the article, my blood starting boiling because I know there might possibly be someone out there fighting to preserve the snakes. Personally, I despise all snakes … so, I was really steaming! I was once told to make a lot of noise when walking down the ramp to our boat, so I even believed the part about snakes ...

A gift for Camden

With the city of Camden having such a distinguished historical heritage, and with so many residents acutely and proudly aware of that heritage and the value of keeping it alive, we are delighted to see the news that statues of Bernard Baruch and Larry Doby will be commissioned and will be placed on the grounds of the Camden Archives and Museum. The work comes through the generosity of Camden resident John Rainey, who's funding the statues, and sculptor Maria J. Kirby-Smith, who will perform the artwork. Those familiar with Kirby-Smith's exquisite sculpture at the Kershaw County Library will ...

School vouchers a "lousy idea'

After having been involved in the political and governmental life in South Carolina since 1963, when I accepted a position on the staff of Gov. Donald Russell, I am still constantly amazed at how long awful ideas persist in our State.

Focusing on finding the best healthcare outcomes

Recently, I attended the Congress on Healthcare Leadership presented by the American College of Healthcare Executives, and I was most impressed by one presentation: Building the New Healthcare Delivery System. In particular, I was struck by the fact that healthcare executives from across the country were focused almost exclusively on this new world of healthcare and its impact on how the organizations they lead are designed.

Beautiful in a different way

She was not a pretty woman in the days of her youth. Her lips were too thin, her forehead too high and her eyes so round that they seemed to bulge into the lens of the glasses she wore.

The road diet boon-doggle mistake

The urgency for the vote was to apply for a grant. A grant is federal tax dollars and not free money as some believe. This type of attitude is one of the reasons our ...
