The Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS) National Honor Society (NHS) completed a fundraiser in February for the Children's Hope Bear Drive. The NHS called the drive "Bears for Bear." The drive ran from January 28 to March 1.
Food for the Soul (FFS) soup kitchen and emergency shelter added five new Kershaw County residents to its board of directors and announced a record-setting year for meals served in 2012.
Food for the Soul's first annual golf tournament will be held Thursday, April 4 at the Camden Country Club (CCC). The tournament will begin at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start.
Scout Sunday was recently celebrated at Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church of Camden. Boy Scouts of Troop 303 and Cub Scout Pack 303 served by welcoming members, distributing bulletins, reading prayers, ushering and assisting with the collection.
The Camden Horse earned first place as the best Sports Specialty Publication or Sports Magazine published by any non-daily newspaper in the state of South Carolina. This is the first year the category has been included in the South Carolina Press Association's (SCPA) annual news contest. Chronicle-Independent (C-I) Editor Martin L. Cahn accepted the award Saturday on behalf of Camden Media Co. Publisher Mike Mischner at the SCPA's annual meeting in Greenville.

Dianne Markwood Thompson passed away Saturday, March 23, 2013 in Camden, South Carolina. Dianne was born in Greensboro, NC and moved to Atlanta, GA, where she spent the majority of her life. She was the daughter of the late Malcom H. and Selma M. Markwood. Dianne was an artist in Atlanta and enjoyed traveling the world. She had moved to Camden in 2011 to be closer to her family.

Mr. Thomas Allen White, 86, of Lancaster, widower of Martha McManus White, passed away Thursday, March 21, 2013 at Springs Memorial Hospital. He was born January 19, 1927 in Lancaster, a son of the late William Baxter White and Hattie Jane Caskey White. Mr. White was a member of Lynnwood United Methodist Church. He had retired from Springs Industries following forty-two years of service and was a US Army World War Two Veteran. Mr. White was a Mason and member of Jackson Lodge # 53, the Hejaz Shrine Temple and the Jackson Shrine Club.
