Funeral service for James Franklin Baker, 75, of Lugoff, will be held Thursday at 3:00 p.m. at El-Bethel Faith Community Church with burial to follow in Providence Baptist Church, Cassatt. Rev. Joe Stines and Rev. Donnie Barrett will officiate. The family will receive friends Wednesday 6-8 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

The library is one of my favorite places. The workers there are friendly and helpful. I grew up in a very small town. The library was one, small room. That room had books and a desk -- that's all. The librarian checked out books, with a rubber stamp. The library wasn't much to look at. But there I explored new worlds in books.

Counterfeit checks seized by ICE, KCSO

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agents and Kershaw County deputies arrested Norman Elliott, 63, at his Lugoff home Sunday after he received a package containing 199 counterfeit checks from Nigeria with a declared value of over $554,000.

Making history with music

Fourteen bands and solo acts will make history at Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site's 16th annual Jammin' in July music festival on July 9. Gates will open at 3:30 p.m. and bands play from 4 to 11:30 p.m. Lawn chairs, blankets, coolers (no glass bottles), and kids welcome, but no pets. Also food concessions, kids' activities, free parking and collectible Jammin' 2011 T-shirts will be available. The rain location is The Venue on Broad Street in downtown Camden. Admission is $18 for adults; $15 for seniors 62 and older and military, $4 for ages 6-12 ...

Exploring life under the sea

Students at Grace Church kindergarten and preschool recently explored all kinds of fun sea creatures during a summer camp themed "Under The Sea." During the camp, students made handprint crab T-shirts that the children painted. The camp included 15 children ages 3 to 5 years old. A second summer camp will be held at Grace Church from July 11 through 14 and the theme will be "Lions, Tigers, and Bears, Oh My!"
