Say cheese!

Women on the Move Inc. Baby of the Year 2010 Baby Contest was held on Sept. 18 at the Quality Inn Banquet Hall. The winners were Second runner up -- Little Miss Ariel Camille Miller, First runner up, Master Kaleb Sanders and Baby of the Year 2010, Little Miss Lauryn Mon'et Bush-Cato. Each contestant was presented with very nice participation gifts and the top thee winners received participation gifts along with trophies and a portion of the money that they raised. All contestants also had a Ice Cream photo shoot in the park prior to the pageant date.

Among the animals available for adoption at the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter are a 2-month-old male dachshund-chow mix puppy and a 4-month-old domestic shorthaired cat. The adoption donation includes spaying or neutering. The shelter, located at the south end of Fair Street and managed by the Kershaw County Humane Society, is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Politics divided

With all the scent of change in the air in Washington, D.C., there's still an unpleasant aroma of business as usual in the nation's capital. Despite all the talk about cutting spending and the profligacy of earmarks, the U. S. Senate refused last week to outlaw them. We don't pretend to say banning earmarks would solve the country's deficit problems, but it would be a symbolic first step; Republican Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma has referred to them as "the gateway drug to spending addiction."
