Pets of the Week - Sept. 18, 2015

Among the animals available for adoption at the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter are Lucky, an 8-month-old male Rotweiler mix, and Peggy, a 9-month-old female domestic short-haired cat. The adoption donation includes spaying or neutering. The Kershaw County Humane Society is in the process of moving the shelter to the new Meyer-Theil Pet Adoption Center on Black River Road. The staff is encouraging people wishing to adopt pets from the shelter to call first at 425-6016. The shelter's website address is www.kershawcountyhs.com.

Scholarship recipient

Richard Black, the grandson of the late David and Estelle Jones of Camden, recently received the Ramon Looby Excellence in Leadership Scholarship from Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Inc. In addition to the scholarship, Black received the Chi Iota Iota Chapter Omega Psi Phi Scholarship, Nina Neely Scholarship of the Eastern Stars, University of South Carolina Legacy Scholarship and National Pan-Hellenic Council Scholarship. KCSD seniors outperform state ACT average

Kershaw County School District (KCSD) 2015 seniors' average composite score on the ACT college entrance exam outperformed the state average for the third straight year. The district's average ranks it third highest among Midlands area school districts and 15th best out of 85 SC school districts.

Dr. Larry Parrott honored with Leadership Legacy bench

Tuesday afternoon, a large group of family and friends gathered to fete Dr. Larry Parrott in Camden's Rectory Square. The ceremony, part of the city of Camden's Leader's Legacy Recognition Program, included the official dedication of a memorial Leadership Legacy bench to Parrott for his years of service to the community.

Addie Gaile Farmer Newman, 60, of Camden, SC, died Tuesday, September 15, 2015. She was born in Bishopville, the daughter of Eleanor Hopkins Farmer and the late Jimmy M. Farmer. Kenneth Melton

A service to celebrate the life of Kenneth "Kenny" Melton, 46, will be held Friday at 5 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home. The Rev. Marvin Jones and the Rev. Jeff Steen will officiate. Charles Burroughs Jr.

Charles Burroughs, Jr., 105, of Camden, passed away peacefully and went home to be with the Lord, September 9, 2015, at his home, with loving family members at his side. He was a lifetime member of St. Matthew UMC in Camden, where he served on several boards. He worked for New York Central Railroad until his retirement after forty years.
