Incivility in politics

Voters here in Kershaw County and across South Carolina were subjected to an endless diatribe of political poison in the days and weeks leading up to Saturday's Republican presidential primary. This endless vitriol is nothing new, of course, as the entire process seems to have degenerated into an endless bout of mud wrestling. If you need evidence that not many people in Washington are concerned about the direction of politics and civility, we'll pass along an item that we discovered not long ago.

Happy 83rd Birthday!!

Millie Branham, of Lugoff, will turn 83 on Thursday, January 26. She has five children, nine grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. She celebrated her birthday at her home with family and friends on Sunday, Jan. 22.

William Reasonover

A memorial service to celebrate the life of William Sumter Reasonover, 84, of Camden will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, January 28, 2012 at Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends immediately following the Service in the Family Life Center. Rev. David Weaver will officiate. Memorials may be made in Mr. Reasonover's memory to Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church, 1206 Lyttleton Street, Camden SC 29020.

There’s more work to be done

Recently I was blessed to visit the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial on the beautiful ground of our National Mall. McKissack and McKissack's Lisa Anders, the senior project manager for the Memorial construction, gave a background on elements of the memorial. Ms. Anders had overall responsibility for management of the contraction. She said the $121 million memorial used varied treatment and textures of water and stone in creating a sense of the diversity of the civil rights movements. It was a singular distinction for an African-American woman.

State should streamline government

Change comes very slowly in South Carolina. But this year we have an exciting chance to make a difference for the future. After more than six years of effort, the South Carolina Legislature is on the brink of true reform in the way our government operates. We can change the structure of our state government and move it away from the unaccountable, auto-pilot it operates in currently to a more responsible and efficient model.

Dogs, Knights suffer single-digit defeats

Marlboro County used a pair of London Johnson free throws in the final 16 seconds of play to give itself a three-point cushion and would then tack on two more insurance points to hold out visiting Camden, 38-33, in a Region 6-AAA boys' basketball game played on Friday night in Bennettsville.

Among the animals available for adoption at the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter are Wally, an adorable 6-week-year-old male kitten and Paige, a 4-year-old female Pointer mix. She is very friendly with other dogs. The adoption donation includes spaying or neutering. William Gamewell (Bill) Major, Jr.

William Gamewell (Bill) Major, Jr., 92, of Camden, SC, passed away on Sunday, July 20, 2014. He was the son of the late William Gamewell Major, Sr. and Alma (Baby) Muldrow-Major of Camden. Born in Florence, S.C. Mr. Major moved to Camden as a youth in 1935. He was the 1st Boy Scout in Kershaw County to be awarded the rank of Eagle Scout.
