Lawsuit No. 3

Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews has been sued for the third time since taking office only a few months ago. While we aren't legal experts, we do see a few interesting developments here, the first one being that Matthews has been no shrinking violet when it comes to making statements about the way the department was run prior to his election. Of course that's not uncommon in South Carolina law enforcement circles; after all, sheriffs are elected and not appointed, and politics is part of the process. Fire forces Lugoff family out of home

The Lugoff Fire Department was dispatched to Meadow Drive in Lugoff July 27 initially for a reported brush fire close to a home. The first arriving firefighter reported to incoming units that the fire was actually inside the home with heavy smoke and fire showing from the roof.

Bethune Lions present checks, awards

The Bethune Lions Club had a very busy meeting recently. First, it had a presentation to the Fine Arts Center (FAC) of Kershaw County. To ensure the students at Bethune Elementary School are provided an arts enrichment program, the Bethune Garden Club, Bethune Lions Club and Bethune Woman's Club banded together and presented the (FAC) with checks totaling $1,000. The FAC will provide the arts enrichment program to Bethune Elementary during the 2011-2012 year.

It's funny how often a problem becomes an answer! I dropped a quarter in a kitchen drawer. It was "lost in the clutter"! I had to throw out stuff that just gets in the way. I found the quarter, and for a "bonus" I found that lost nut pick. It feels better when clutter doesn't get in the way.

Leslie Wood

Mr. Leslie Wood, 88, of Lugoff, departed this life Sunday July 31, 2011 at Kershaw Health, Camden. He was a Veteran of World War II United States Army. He was a retiree of E. I. DuPont, Camden South Carolina. He is survived by his loving wife of sixty-five years; Mrs. Viola S. Wood, four daughters; Byrdyne (Franklin) Bell of Augusta, GA, Brenda Wood of Lugoff, SC, Sandra Wood of Columbia, SC and Shelia (Floyd) Bracey of Lugoff, SC; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; a sister; Inez Cunningham of Lugoff, SC and a host of other relatives and friends.

KC teens attend conference of more than 1,500 youth

Latter-day Saint teenagers from North and South Carolina gathered last week on the campus of East Carolina University for a Christian youth conference. The theme of the conference "One, But Not Alone" is based on the New Testament scripture "So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another" (Romans 12:5).

Charles Cushman Jr.

Charles V.B. Cushman, Jr., age 85, of Camden, died Monday, August 1, 2011 at his summer home in Chadds Ford, PA., that he shared with his wife, Joanne Bahr Cushman. Charlie was born in Boston, Massachusetts on June 9, 1926, and spent his childhood in Upperville, Virginia. His entire adult life was spent in Camden. Charlie worked extensively in thoroughbred horse racing and training and he was very active in supporting the Kershaw County Hospital Foundation as well as the Camden equestrian community. Local photographer’s work goes to international exhibition

Two photographs created by Patty Hallman of Hallman Photography LLC in Lugoff have recently been accepted into the Loan Collection and General Collection of Professional Photographers of America's 2011 International Photographic Competition. Hallman's work will be on display at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, January 15-17, 2012, in New Orleans, La. This exhibition is held in conjunction with Imaging USA, an annual convention of professional photographers and several photographic associations.
