Pets of the week -- July 22, 2011

Among the animals available for adoption at the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter are Colt, a 1-year-old neutered shepherd mix dog, and Charlie, a 4-month-old male orange tabby kitten. The adoption donation includes spaying or neutering. The shelter, located at the south end of Fair Street and managed by the Kershaw County Humane Society, is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Priester comes to aid of travelers in distress

Some people deserve recognition for going "above and beyond" and Al Priester, who runs AAA Towing in Lugoff, is one of them. My family and I were traveling from North Carolina to Georgia on Memorial Day when the transmission burned up in our car. We were on I-20 in Lugoff and Al was there a few minutes after calling roadside assistance. We weren't able to get a rental car so he took us to a hotel and said to call him if we needed anything. That meant a lot to us, being in a new place without a car.

Wayne D. Davis

Wayne D. Davis, of Astor, Fla., passed away at home surrounded by his three daughters. Mr. Davis was born on Nov 29 1936 in Camden S.C to the parents of Clennie and Zada Davis. He served in the United States Army for 25 yrs, retiring as a Sgt Major. Upon his retirement he moved from Gainesville, Fl. relocating to Micanopy, Fl. in 1981. He became founder of The Pearl Of Micanopy Inc., in 1986 until 2002 at which time he retired to Astor, Fl.
