Carolina Cup Eve party at Steeplechase Museum

The National Steeplechase Museum will hold a Carolina Cup Eve Party on the back lawn overlooking Springdale Race Course on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. The Museum traditionally invites its members, the general public and visiting horsemen to mix and mingle at the historic setting.

Recreation not a current need

Your lead article in the March 16 issue had to do with a proposed tax for more county recreational projects. Why would County Council even consider this a major need for our county? As a matter of fact, I question the authority of Council to levy a sales tax for recreational purposes in the first place.

• We notice that Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich has, as some used to say with regularity, "done gone to quoting the Bible" in his attempt to win the White House. Gingrich told a recent audience that Proverbs warns that "without vision, people will perish." Time has proven that people often try hard to prove things by using statistics and the Bible, both of which can be manipulated. We'd prefer he stay away from the scriptures when it comes to touting his own candidacy.

Good government?

Last week, it was reported that South Carolina ranked among the states most at risk for corruption. In a study conducted by State Integrity Investigation, a project of the Center for Public Integrity, Global Integrity, and Public Radio International, South Carolina received a grade of "F" and ranked 45th among the 50 states.
