Kershaw County Back to School Bash helps provide school supplies to needy families

The Kershaw County Back to School Bash Committee utilizes community resources to provide free school supplies to area youth and help families access information and services within the community. The committee is celebrating its 15th year of service to the community and anticipates assisting approximately 1,500 elementary, middle, high and college students from Kershaw County and surrounding areas.

American Legion Auxiliary Post 17 installs new officers, helps provide scholarship money for student

The American Legion Auxiliary Post 17 participated in selecting and sponsoring five delegates from Kershaw County to attend Palmetto Girls State June 12-18. The tuition of each student was shared by the unit and American Legion Post 17 members.

CLASS Shag Blast 2011

The 2011 CLASS Shag Blast was held June 11 at the Camden Shrine Club. It is the Camden Lugoff Area Shag Society's annual major fund raising event. This year the CLASS Shag Blast benefited the Community Medical Clinic of Kershaw County and Food for the Soul of Kershaw County. Thanks to sponsors and the work of club members, $3,600 was donated to the organizations. This is the most the club has been able to donate in the last seven years.

Among the animals available for adoption at the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter are Jonser, a 4-month-old male Catahoula hound mix puppy, and Oliver, a 4-month-old male orange and white tabby kitten. The adoption donation includes spaying or neutering. The shelter, located at the south end of Fair Street and managed by the Kershaw County Humane Society, is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Many questions remain regarding YMCA proposal

I have been closely following the debate about creating a YMCA facility here in Camden. As much as I would like to be able to enjoy a year-round indoor pool, I cannot agree with our city leaders that this is the best use of my hospitality tax money. First of all, the Recreation Department already operates a successful pool and owns enough adjoining land that the pool could be enclosed, a gym could be built, and new offices that the department desperately needs could be housed in the same facility on Battleship Road.
