Emerson David McCoy, son of Charles Whitehurst McCoy and the late Margaret Carolyn Emerson McCoy departed this life January 14, 2013 in Melbourne, Arkansas at the age of 57 years old. A memorial service was held Saturday, January 19 at 3:00 p.m. at the home Jack and Mary Crayne, 413 Chesnut Street, Camden, SC.
Funeral Mass for John James Murphy, 69, will be celebrated on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. Father Francis Travis will officiate. A Rosary will be recited Friday at 6:00 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home, with visitation to follow till 8:00 p.m. The burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
Having lost to Fairfield Central, 67-55, in Tuesday's final game of the conference and region season, the North Central boys' basketball team had to wait out the final outcome of that night's game between Eau Claire and Columbia to learn of their post-season fate.
His name is Richard, but we called him Chief. No, he was not a member of the police force nor was he a local Native American Tribal elder. He was, and is, a Chief Warrant Officer Four (CW4) in the Army, or "Chief" in the slang terminology of the military.

The Kershaw County Recreation Department is currently registering for the Youth Baseball Leagues. Boys and girls must be four by May 1, 2013 to play baseball. Girls must be seven by May 1, 2013 to play softball. Girls must be 10 years old by Jan. 1, 2013 to play Fast Pitch. Registration Fee is $32.
Ed Smith and Dana Sloan are the newest members of Elgin Town Council following an election Tuesday. Smith automatically won his seat, recently vacated by Larry Risvold, by virtue of being the only person officially on the ballot. Sloan, who missed the official candidate registration period, ran as a write-in candidate for the seat most recently held by Roger Ross, who decided not to seek reelection.
Margaret Salmond, born on May 15, 1933, daughter of the late Matilda Brooks Lugoff, passed away in peace on Monday, Feb. 4, 2013. Margaret accepted Jesus Christ as her savior and was a member of Greater Refuge Temple Church in New York, NY, where she resided and served as prayer warrior until her health began to deteriorate and moved back to her native Lugoff, S.C. in 2001. She attended International Praise Church of God.
Ed Koch: abrasive, funny, inspirational, Mayor of New York 1978-1989. Friday morning, he passed away. His passing can mean little to many of us in Camden; but to us former New Yorkers, especially those of us who worked to alleviate the financial crisis and the deterioration of life in New York, it is a time for us to remember and honor him. I hope you will share this remembrance with me.
