Funeral Services for Alava Drakeford, Jr. 77, of 3307 John G. Richards Road in Camden will be held Thursday, June 21, 2012, 2 p.m., at St. John Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Mr. Drakeford died Sunday, June 17, 2012. Collins Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
A celebration of Life Service for Mrs. Ruth (Fred) Johnson, 89, of Camden, will be held Saturday, June 23, 2012, at 11:00 am at Powers Funeral Home in Lugoff, SC. The Rev. Bruce Hancock will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Brent Kendall. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.
Imagine being a little boy growing up at the Hobkirk Inn when its formal gardens, designed by Scottish landscape architect James Crammond, were in their prime. The garden was laid out in a large rectangle with wide paths to run down and nooks and crannies in which to play hide and seek. Tall cherry laurel, or mock orange, arches framed the entrances to the parterre garden and beyond them lay the wide open land and woodlands of the Hobkirk Inn, which encompassed 34.75 acres in its early years. Photo cutline -- A stiff upper lip -- Bethune Elementary School Principal Doby Gordon recently sported a clean-shaven upper lip for the first time in seven years. BES students Timothy Smith, Brandie Freeman and Brad Freeman earned the honor of shaving Gordon's mustache off for having read the most books during the 1991/92 school year. The trio read between 11 and 13 books each. Gordon's mustache is already growing back in.
Those voters, aka taxpayers, that attended the Kershaw County Council meeting to protest the idea that the Sheriff's Department would be downgraded to Kershaw County Police astounded the members of council to the extent this idea was abandoned. This is not to be left laying around. Don't be surprised if this move becomes a part of another move or to be brought before council to vote on again.
