Funeral service with military honors for SSG Patrick Edward Montgomery, U.S. Army (Ret'd), 63, of Lugoff, will be held Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home with burial to follow in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Mark Bredholt will officiate. The family will receive friends Wednesday 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. 4-H Challenge winners

Two local 4-H teams won awards at the State 4-H Healthy Lifestyles Challenge Event held at the S.C. State Fair. The 4-H Healthy Lifestyles Challenge is modeled after such competitions as the Food Network's "Iron Chef," where they must create a healthy dish. Team members had to prepare a dish, make an oral presentation, interpret a food label, plan a menu utilizing the dish and prepare a fitness plan. • We haven't been very impressed with the "Occupy" protestors at different sites across the United States -- most don't appear to have much of an idea of what they're protesting -- but unless there is something that doesn't meet the eye, police officers at the University of California-Davis used poor judgment in directing pepper spray at students who appear to be passively sitting on the ground. Further examination might provide new evidence warranting the officers' actions, but at first blush it appeared inexcusable.

‘Fire Stop’ extinguisher puts out kitchen fire

Lugoff Fire-Rescue (LF-R) crews arrived at the scene of a reported kitchen fire at Sherwood Apartments around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to find only a light haze of smoke, but no fire. According to a LF-R press release, an automatic fire extinguisher magnetically attached to the stove hood had activated and extinguished the grease fire before it spread into the rest of the kitchen and apartment.
